In 2022, I completed a Masters Degree in Music with First Class Honours.
My thesis was based around inferring perceptual contents of audience experience. This is a wide topic that has many implications for both sound design and music, and any other sonic artwork.
Thesis: Inferring Perceptual Contents of Audience Experience in Music
Abstract: In this paper I explore how concepts and philosophies from within perceptual studies may be relevant and meaningful to musicians. Psychology and philosophy of mind both offer various theories on perception, cognition, and the interaction between the two. I propose that such theories may be valuable in allowing musicians to infer and understand the contents of audience experience in a novel way. Given that audience perception influences choices made within performance and composition, a cross-disciplinary understanding of concepts from perceptual research may prove valuable and informative to creative practice. In support of this, I highlight an epistemological gap that exists when only verbal accounts of audience reception are relied upon to understand audience experience.
